2017 trip - Kauai, Northern California, Oregon and much more (day 19: Redwood National and State Park)

No, non stiamo esagerando.

This time the word "gate town" is the most appropriate. Crescent City really opens the door to a magical world that will accompany us for the last 150 miles of "highway 101", indisputably and inextricably the most beautiful, a stretch of coast that really seems to come out of the best "Disney" fairy tales. No, we are not over-willing. The most underrated national park of the west is a gem not so hidden, but very snubbed by the lazy travelers who just visit the most famous part of California, the center-south. And yet Redwood National & State Park is a real gem, a hundred miles of wilderness, enclosed in three State Parks (Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast and Prairie Creek Redwood State Park) that actually creates the amazing Redwood National Park, made by "Sequoia sempervirens", so called for the reddish color of the wood. To put it very simple, these are the tallest trees in the world. Even if probably pictures doesn't really do it justice, this place, a bit 'magical and a bit' mystical, called Redwood National Park has greatly impressed us as much as the Sequoia NP. Maybe even more. Part of some of the most prestigious movies have been filmed in this area: for example Star Wars, the Lost World-Jurassic Park and Lethal Virus.

There are many things to see and do in Redwood National Park and once again you will have to make choices, even painful ones, if you only have one day to spend into the park. Like us. Coming from the north, the first approach to the Redwood forest is at the Jedediah Smith State Park, north of Crescent City. Follow the 101 backwards and then take the 199 up to the small community of Hiouchi.

For those who want to extend the route a little bit we recommend the Simpson-Reed Grove Trail (0.9 miles), otherwise turn right immediately after passing Houichi. The S Fork Road, which will later become Douglas Park Drive and finally Howland Hill, is a dirt road (passable by any car) that for the first time will make you get in touch with the majestic Sequoia Sempervirens. You will find one of the most striking woods of the entire park, the Stout Memorial Grove (0.7 miles), a trail that will also allow you to learn a lot about each tree.

Driving along the Howland Hill you will find yourself south of Crescent City, along the Redwood Highway (101) that allow you to cross the entire park from north to south. Before entering the heart of Redwood National Park, a detour along the Enderts Beach Road will take you close to the homonymous beach full of starfish. The trail is 1.2 miles long. We prefer to stop by a very special place, called Trees Of Mystery. You will notice itf, thanks to the huge statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox that welcome you.

Trees of Mystery is a tourist attraction which features many Giant Redwoods and a number of unusual tree formations, many of which can be seen from its Trail of Mysterious Trees. Its Trail of Tall Tales displays some 50 chainsaw sculptures and carvings illustrating stories of legendary logger Paul Bunyan and his crew. In 2001 an aerial tramway was installed called the Skytrail. It takes guests on a 1/3-mile ride through the forest, allowing them to see parts of the attraction from a different point of view. It culminates at an observation deck where the Pacific Ocean is visible above the surrounding forest.

Anyway, that's still the land of "Bigfoot". Stories and legends of Bigfoot and similar creatures pervade the history of the Pacific Northwest. Today, Northern California remains the unofficial home of Bigfoot, with the most sightings to date. The National Forest Service even named a remote stretch of California Route 96 as the "Bigfoot Scenic Highway." There is also a 360-mile trail in NorCal's vast upper wilderness named the "Bigfoot Trail," which stretches through the Yolly-Bolly, Trinity Alps, Russian, Marble Mountain and Siskiyou Wildernesses. There is no concrete evidence of its existence but just walking inside the Trees of Mystery store will convince you that the legendary Big Foot really exists.

Continuing along the 101 towards Klamath you will have the opportunity to drive for the first time inside a tree. There are several places where you can experience it, but don't forget that you could to this for free in the Sequoia National Park. We turn left along Coastal Drive (Klamath Beach Road), one of the park's scenic bway. The Costal Drive is only partially paved and, just at the point where the asphalt ends, we find a barrier. If you're luckier than us you'll have the chance to visit the World War II radar station, a radar station camouflaged by farm and granary during the Second World War.

The Costal Drive joins the Newton Drury Byway just south of the bifurcation with the 101. The Newton Drury Byway  crosses one of the most scenic areas of the park, the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (127011 Newton B Drury Parkway, Orick), where you can see Elks, perhaps quietly sitting on one of the benches not far from the Visitor Center. Not far away there's the Big Tree Wayside, one of the most photographed trees in the park. clicking on the link below you will find the list of the other most famous redwoods: https://www.visitredwoods.com/listing/ten-must-see-redwood-trees/252/

Some trails that begin around the visitor center are the "five minute trail", a very short trail, and the "Elk Prairie trail", 2 miles long. That's the main area of the park, famous also for the trail that leads to Fern Canyon, the real pride of Redwood National Park. If you want to reach it by car (Day Use Fee), drive along the Davidson Road and follow the 10-mile paved road that leads to the Canyon. Even if the walls are not as high as those, for example, of the Narrows of Zion, they worth a visit.

Anyway, we're actually here for the magic of the redwoods and we want to focus on them and in particular on a beautiful trail, which is located along the Bald Hill Road.

(Bald Hill Road)

After 3 miles, leave the car at the parking lot (picnic area) and cross the small bridge that will open the doors of an enchanted world, that of the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail.

The fog, typical of summer days (in fall time, however, are the fires to invade the area), does nothing but increase the sense of magic that surrounds the trail of 1.3 miles. Going along it we expect that at any moment a fairy tale animal or a magical creature will come out, an almost unreal sensation.

We would have spent half an hour hiking the trail, but we stayed for two hours in this paradise. This is why we couldn't visit another special place in the park, still located along Baldwin Road. This is second prestigious trail, the 3.5 miles of the Tall Trees Grove Trail. If you want to visit it, do not forget that you will have to obtain a (free) permit at the Kuchel Visitor Center and then drive for about 45 minutes until you reach the Tall Trees trail. The restriction on access imposed by the rangers has meant that this trail is never crowded and a kind of paradise for photographers.

Along the trail you will also find the tallest tree in the world. Well, you have to know that the Redwood National & State Park can boast among its ranks the two tallest trees in the world. Until 2006, the primacy belonged to the Libby Tree (visible at the end of the Tall Trees Grove Trail), not it belongs to another tree whose identity was not yet known, probably because it is located in an area of the park not reachable from tourists.

Before reaching Arcata and Eureka, the twin cities in the heart of the "lost coast", we can not miss another "covered bridge". You can see many of them both on the Oregon and Northern California coast. This area is very similar to New England and, not surprisingly, there are several covered bridges that you will find along the way. This is "Brookwood Covered Bridge" in the small town of Bayside (4085 brookwood drive), between beautiful houses and the usual enchanting nature.

(143 M St, Eureka).

And don't forget to visit Eureka, which however did not impressed us as we expected. What to see in the largest city between San Francisco and Portland? The lively coastal town offers above all a solid history, once marked by Victorian-style buildings that can be visited in the "old town". Which is the most beautiful house? Definitely the William Carson Mansion, built in 1884 by a timber baron according to Queen Anne Style: it's now a private club. Another very pretty one, located right across the street, is the J. Milton Carson House. (143 M St, Eureka).

The harbour is also very liveable, characterized by fishing boats and by the Mv Madaket, a ferry that offers cruises on Humboldt Bay every 75 minutes. The Humboldt Bay Tourism Center (205 G St, Eureka) allows you to taste wines, beers, and taste local oysters, as well as providing information and advice on galleries, souvenir shops and restaurants in Eureka and surroundings. There's also a famous university, the Humboldt State University, in the nearby Arcata. Arcata is the small town where we decided to spend the night. Well, it won't be very hot, but if you want a good ice cream, Arcata Scoop (1068 I St, Arcata) is definitely the place for you ...
