The best moment of the vacation is coming, we only need to choose the gate and then there will be almost four days to spend in one of the most beautiful parks in the world, certainly the oldest (founded in 1872). Coming from Cody we choose to enter from the Northeast Entrance, touching for the first time the Montana and descending along the prairies of Wyoming ...
sino a quando incontriamo l'ormai classico cartello che segnala l'entrata nel parco. Sono le 13, la nostra avventura nello Yellowstone National Park può iniziare.
till we meet the classic sign marking the entrance to the park. It's 1pm, our adventure in Yellowstone National Park begins.
La Lamar Valley con le sue vallate ci condurrà verso l'"8", ovvero il percorso che appunto assomiglia ad un "8" e che rappresenta il cuore del parco. Non abbiamo ancora idea di ciò che ci aspetta, ci siamo informati ed abbiamo "studiato", ma non è facilissimo preparare la visita di un parco molto grande come Yellowstone.
The Lamar Valley with its valleys will lead us towards what is commonly called the "8", which is basically the path that looks like an "8" and that is the heart of the park. We have "studied" the park, but it is not easy to prepare a visit of a very large park like Yellowstone. So a stop at the visitor center is required.
Abbiamo scelto di allungare il tragitto ed entrare da nord est proprio per i suoi panorami e per la tanta wildlife che s'incontra: ovviamente tanti bisonti e anche qualche piccolo bisontino. Proviamo anche a stare pronti nell'eventualità che qualche orso appaia, ma da questo punto di vista non saremo molto fortunati.
Entering from the northeast entrance there are beautiful views and there is much wildlife to see: obviously many bison and even a few small bison. We also try to be ready in the event that some bears appear, but from this point of view we will not be so lucky during our trip in Yellowstone.
Entrati nell'"8" ci dirigiamo verso la Mammoth Area e, dopo una breve sosta al visitor center siamo pronti per percorrere il "loop". La prima tappa sono le Mammoth Hot Springs, le più strane tra le Hot Springs per via dell'enorme quantità di carbonato di calcio che negli anni si è depositato.
As soon as we enter into the "8" we head towards the Mammoth Area and we are now ready to do the loop. First stage is Mammoth Hot Springs, the strangest Hot Springs because of the enormous amount of calcium carbonate that has been deposited there over the years.
Neanche a farlo apposta siamo vicinissimi ad un posto poco conosciuto (non lo troverete mai pubblicizzato e neppure sulle mappe, lo abbiamo scoperto per caso spulciando in internet), ovvero un luogo, a ridosso dell'entrata nord, dove è possibile fare il... bagno. Raggiungiamo il fiume, percorriamo qualche centinaio di metri seguendo l'indicazione "Boiling river" fino a quando vediamo tantissime persone immerse in acqua.
We are very close to an unknown place (you won't find it on the maps) where you can have a bath in warm water! It's about 5 minutes from the north entrance, along a river. We reach the river, walk a few hundred meters following the sign "Boiling River" until we see a lot of people in water!
Quella gelida del fiume si unisce a quella caldissima (sui 100 gradi) del "Boiling river".
That icy river joins the hot one (really really hot, if you touch it you get burnt) of the "Boiling River".
Sembra davvero di essere alle terme...

Non vorremmo più uscire, ma il dovere chiama e, dato che siamo nella zona nord, andiamo a visitare quella che è l'entrata storica (nord appunto) amatissima dal presidente Roosevelt al quale è stato dedicato l'arco, il Roosevelt Arch.
We don't want to leave this pool, but we have to... and, just because we are in the north area of the park we visit the historical entrance, particularly loved by the president Roosevelt: the Roosevelt Arch.
Sono le 16, è tempo di tornare nell'"8" per poi raggiungere West Yellowstone, nel Montana (appena fuori dal parco), che abbiamo preferito al "dormire nel parco" per una semplice questione logistica. West Yellowstone è comunque una cittadina nella quale si trova di tutto e abbiamo scelto la comodità di avere tutto a portata di mano. A livello di costi butta malino dato che, sia dentro che fuori il parco gli alloggi costano moltissimo. Anche i motel. Lungo il tragitto percorriamo la parte nord-ovest dell'"otto" ed incrociamo il Norris Geyser Basin prima di uscire dal parco. E' l'occasione per vedere i primi geyser...
It's 4pm, and it's time to get back in to the '"8" and then reach West Yellowstone, Montana (just outside the park). We preferred West Yellowstone instead of "sleep into the park" for a simple logistical question. West Yellowstone is still a town where you can find anything and we have chosen the convenience of having everything at your fingertips. Even in this town accomodation is expensive. Along the way we cross the Norris Geyser Basin before leaving the park. It 'an opportunity to see the first geyser ...

Il panorama, come spesso accadrà all'interno di Yellowstone, è da cartolina.
The view, as often happens in Yellowstone, is amazing.
Lungo il Norris Geyser Basin sarebbero diversi i trail da fare, ma ormai ci conoscete bene e sapete che preferiamo un tuffo nel fiume a lunghe camminate e... il tempo stringe. Percorriamo solamente i sentieri comodi (e così faremo anche nei giorni successivi), anche perchè riteniamo sia anche la scelta più conveniente sia in termini di fatica che di tempo.
Along Norris Geyse Basin you could do a lot of trails, but you know... we don't like hiking, we prefer a dive into the water! We only do easy trails and we think this is the most convenient choice.
Ah armatevi di santa pazienza. Se vi capitano lavori in corso o peggio ancora animali lungo la strada rischiate interminabili code e ritardi anche di un'ora. Succede a noi nel momento in cui decidiamo di uscire dal parco...
Well, you need to be patient. If there are road works or if there are animals on the road, delayed could be very heavy. It happens to us while we are leaving the park.
ma recuperiamo ampiamente con una cena al Three Bear, dove per la prima volta assaggeremo carne di bisonte e alce. Entrambe molto, molto buone.
but everything is forgotten when we have dinner at Three Bear. For the first time we are eating bison and elk. Very, very good!
