This is the longest stage of the trip and, as oftent happens, even one of the most fascinating day. Leaving Naples, the next steps are the Key island, but first we have go through the Everglades and try to live more intensely a road that allows a lot of "scenic" stops
La prima? Arrivati a Homestead-Florida City svoltiamo verso destra lungo la Highway 9336 seguendo le indicazioni per l'Everglades National Park e, proprio una manciata di miglia prima dell'ingresso del parco vediamo un ortofrutta del tutto particolare.
The first one? In Homestead-Florida City we turn right along the highway 9336 and while we are following the Everglades National Park signs, find a very special greengrocery just few miles before the park entrance.
Si chiama "Robert is Here" e, secondo voi, possiamo non fermarci? La risposta è scontata: nel retro c'è una sorta di mini zoo con animali da fattoria, ma la peculiarità sono i prodotti in vendita.
Its name is "Robert is Here" and a stop here is obvious. In the back there is a kind of very small zoo with farm animals, but the main attraction is the fresh fruit they sell.
Avocados grandi come palle da basket, tangerines, mango bread e molto altro. Tutto buonissimo e, tutto legato al motto "assaggialo, se ti piace lo compri". E vogliamo parlare delle centrifughe di frutta e dei milkshake?

Quella che avrebbe dovuto essere una breve sosta legata alla curiosità si trasforma in una vera e proprio visita. E non preoccupatevi, non impostate alcun navigatore: se state per affrontare il parco sarà impossibile non vederlo. Se siamo qui però è perchè vorremmo visitare le Everglades dopo l'esperienza del 2012 dove al parco preferimmo l'escursione sull'airboat (a chi dovesse interessare, rimandiamo a questo link: East Coast 2012). Sono però già le 12 e, con ancora quattro ore di viaggio da affrontare per raggiungere Key West, scegliamo ancora una volta la "toccata e fuga".
What was meant to be a quick stop has become a full tour. And do not worry, do not set any gps: if you are going to face the Everglades you won't miss it. Anyway if we are here it's because we would like to visit, after two years, the Everglades again. Two years ago we preferred the airboat tour to the park (please refer to this link: East Coast 2012), now it's time to visit the National Park. The only problem is that it's already noon and we have to face a four-hour trip to get to Key West. We can stay here for not more than 1-2 hours...
Ci fermiamo al visitors center e chiediamo indicazioni per l'Anhinga Trail, che sappiamo essere il modo migliore per ammirare la fauna delle Everglades. Sì, lo sappiamo, non si visita così un parco, ma abbiamo solo ora le idee chiare su come andrebbero visitate le Everglades: almeno un giorno intero andrebbe dedicato al parco e, se vi avanza una mezza giornata, aggiungete anche l'escursione sugli airboat.
We stop at the visitors center looking for some informations about the Anhinga Trail, which we is the best way to see all the wildlife of the Everglades. Yes, we know this isn't the right way to visit a park, but it's not so easy. We have been there twice and only now we really know how to visit the Everglades: at least a full day should be dedicated to the park and, if you have much more time, add also an the excursion on the airboat.
Paghiamo l'entrata (10 dollari a veicolo, ticket valido per sette giorni) e raggiungiamo l'Ahinga trail che, ironia della sorte, è anche la prima fermata.
We pay the entrance fees (10 dollar per car, ticket is valid for 7 days) and reach the first and last stop: the Anhinga Trail.
Sì, la domanda che sicuramente vi starete facendo ce la siam fatta anche noi e, a dirla tutta, non appena siamo arrivati a Key West, abbiamo anche cercato in internet qualcosa sull'eventuale "pericolosità" dell'Ahinga Trail.

Pericolosità che a quanto pare non esiste.
but apparently this is not a dangerous place. Or at least not as dangerous as you can imagine.
Voi e gli altri 100-200 turisti sarete a tu per tu con i gators e con gli altri animali (senza alcuna protezione), che spesso "percorrono" insieme a voi il trail, ma prestando un pizzico di attenzione non rischierete nulla.
You and other 100-200 tourists will be face to face with gators and other animals (with no protections) that often run through the trail with you. Be careful and it will be a safe walk.
Il loop è affascinante, vediamo tantissimi animali: ovviamente gli alligatori, ma anche tartarughe ed un'infinità di uccelli.
The loop is very interesting: a lot of animals, of course a lot of gators but even turtles and birds.
E molti di loro sembrano, come noi, controllare con la coda dell'occhio i movimenti di questi enormi bestioni che sono da sempre il simbolo dello stato della Florida.
Many of them, like us, are checking behind of them the movements of theese huge gators, symbols of the entire state of Florida.
Lasciate le Everglades ci immergiamo nelle isole Keys, riabbracciando la Overseas Highway. La prima parte, come ci ricordavamo, è piuttosto monotona, complici anche i limiti di velocità che, mettiamola così, non sono altissimi, e soprattutto per il fatto che il mare ancora non si vede. Lasciata Key Largo ecco Islamorada ed ecco finalmente il mare.
Leaving the Everglades National Park it's time go through the Keys and finally embracing the Overseas Highway. The first step is a little bit boring, just because of the speed limits and, of course, because you can't see the sea. Leaving Key Largo, here we finally are in Isla Morada: the sea appears in front of us.
Ci fermiamo in qualche luogo caratteristico, come ad esempio un piccolo molo (con annesso ristorante con "vista", il famoso whale harbour marina) che pare stia aspettando proprio noi...
We stop in some characteristic places, for example a small pier (with a restaurant with a view, the famous whale harbour marina): it seems it's waiting for us...
o ancora uno stranissimo mercatino, legato al mondo dei surfisti.

At the famous "7mile bridge", the most fascinating partof the entire overseas highway, it's time to take some pictures...
Al suo fianco, infatti, c'è un tratto della vecchia ferrovia, ora "casa" ogni giorno di centinaia di pescatori.
Close to the bridge there is, in fact, a part of the old railway, now home of hundreds of fishermen.
Ne percorriamo un piccolo tratto, prima di riprendere l'auto e superare tutte le altre "keys" sino a raggiungere Key West, l'ultima e più famosa isola. E, prima che ve lo domandiate... sì, il luogo più bello dell'intera Florida.
We walk along the small bridge for 15 minutes, then we come back to the car because sunset is coming and Key West is still far.
Fatichiamo e non poco a trovare l'ingresso del nostro Bed and Breakfast (a Key West gli alloggi sono carissimi, ma questa volta non potevamo commettere lo stesso errore di due anni fa, quando per risparmiare dormimmo fuori città), fino a quando un turista tedesco che sta alloggiando nel nostro stesso posto, capisce che siamo in difficoltà e ci porta a raccogliere la busta nella quale avremmo trovato tutte le indicazioni e soprattutto, la chiave della camera. Siamo in America no? Di Key West parleremo approfonditamente nella prossima puntata, per ora ci limitiamo ad una camminata lungo le vie del centro a ridosso di Mallory Square...
We have some difficulties in finding the entrance of our B&B (in Key West rooms are expensive, but this time we couldn't make the same mistake we made two years ago when we slep in another island in order to save money), fortunately we meet a german guy who is staying at the same hotel, so he helps us finding the entrance. But it's not over, it's evening and the reception is close, so he tells us that in the envelopes attached at the door there are the instruction and the roomkey of our reservation. Aren't we in the US or not? We have a fast dinner and a little walk on the main street! Tomorrow will be a full day, so it's time to go to bed.
