Facciamo colazione in giardino insieme ai pochi altri ospiti, le camere non sono tantissime in questo B&B. Dobbiamo aspettare Sandra, la padrona, che arrivi in reception per poter fare il check in che non eravamo riusciti a fare la sera prima e nel frattempo cerchiamo di organizzare la giornata. Ci si accende una lampadina: chiediamo a Sandra se è possibile noleggiare delle biciclette e lei, gentilmente, ci spiega dove andare! Arriviamo al negozio a piedi, ma già prima di entrare siamo assaliti da mille dubbi, ormai però siamo lì e vogliamo comunque avere un'idea di come funzioni il noleggio. Rispetto ad altre proposte sentite durante i nostri viaggi americani, qui il noleggio non costa molto, ma alla fine decidiamo di girare l'isola a piedi per vivere al meglio l'atmosfera di un posto unico come Key West
We realize that it will be a beautiful day since the first rays of sun coming through the blinds of the window-door, it's 7.30 am and we feel the sea-air. We have breakfast in the garden with the other guests, there are few rooms in this B&B. We have to wait for Sandra, the hostess, who will open the reception, still have to do the chek in, meanwhile we try to organise the day. As Sandra arrives we ask her if it's possible to rent bikes and she explanes us where we should go. We walk to the store, but before getting in we have some doubts. Although bike rental is quite cheap, we decide to go through the island by walk.
The first place to go to is the Southernmost Point. We want to go there early in the morning because we know this is tourist "trap" (thankfully it's free) with an endless tail. In effect this is exactly what we find.
All the people are waiting for a picture in the most southern point of the entire United States, just 90 miles far from Cuba. We wait patiently, luckily some trees are protecting us from the sun... It is very hot in here even though it's only 10 in the morning! Finally comes our turn: while we are taking the classic photo we realize that in front of us there is the beautiful Cuba!
Lasciamo il Southernmost point e troviamo un venditore ambulante che con 3$ buca con un trapano una noce di cocco e ci infila una cannuccia: è un miraggio! Con questo caldo della sana e fresca acqua di cocco è un toccasana! (L'Ale ha già deciso che questo sarà il suo prossimo lavoro!).
Leaving the Southernmost Point here there is a street vendor. For 3 dollars we buy a coconut fresh water, served of course in a coconut just opened with a drill: it's a mirage. Ale decides this is going to be her next job!
Anche i galli, un altro dei simboli di Key West e che potete trovare ad ogni angolo delle strade (e spesso anche in strada) ci guardano con invidia!
Even roosters, another symbol of Key West (you find them in every corner) look at us with a little bit of envy!
Considerato che, che per arrivare al Southermost Point abbiamo percorso per metà la via principale di Key West, la Duval St., al ritorno, almeno per un po', decidiamo di percorrere la parallela: la Whitehead St. In modo tale da poter così passare per il famoso Faro dell'isola...
Considering that we've walked at least half of Key West main street (Duval street), we decide to hit another road for the coming back (Whitehead st). That's because there are a lot of things to see, for example the famous island Lighthouse ...
e dalla casa di Hemingway (dove però la lunga coda... e il prezzo, ci "invitano" ad ammirarne solo l'esterno)...
and Hemingway's house, where however the long tail and the price force us to admire it just from outside...
fino ad arrivare all'incrocio con Petronia St. dove si trova il Green Parrot Bar: primo e ultimo bar sulla US1 ed anche il più antico dell'intera Key West.
till reaching the intersection with Petronia street. Here there is the famous Green Parrot Bar, first and last bar on the US1 and even the oldest of the entire Key West island.
Sulla via verso "casa"c'è l'imperdibile cimitero, famoso per il fatto che su alcune delle tombe vi siano delle frasi particolari e/o spiritose che ricordino il defunto. Non si può entrare o almeno così ci sembra (è pur sempre un luogo di preghiera), ma qualche frase riusciamo a leggerla dall'esterno. Senza dubbio il cimitero numero uno al mondo!
On the way to "home" we cant' miss the cemetery, famous for the fact that on some of the graves there are particular phrases. You cannot enter or so it seems (it's still a place of prayer!), but you'll be able to read some sentences from the outside. No doubt, this is the number one cemetery in the world!
Dopo aver camminato parecchio (non meno di 3-4 chilometri) ci meritiamo un po' di relax in spiaggia.
After a long walk (not less then 2-3 miles) we really deserve a little bit of relax on the beach.
Famosa è quella nel Fort Zachary Taylor State Park (ingresso a piedi 2,50$ a testa, 7$ con l'auto), anche se, ed è l'unica pecca di Key West, la spiaggia non è bellissima. Facciamo anche fatica a fare il bagno perchè anche il fondale è pieno di sassi e l'acqua diventa subito alta.
One of the most famous beach in situated inside the Zachary Taylor State Park (2.50 dollars single entrance, 7 by car) even if the beach is not that beautiful. And this is the only bad thing in Key West. It's even difficult to have a bath beacuse there are a lot of pebbles.
Restiamo non più di un paio d'ore, anche perchè abbiamo un tramonto da vedere e per le 17 vorremmo essere in Mallory square per prendere posto.
We have stayed for not more than a couple of hours, also because there is a sunset to see and the point is that we would like be in Mallory Square at 5 pm.
Noi arriviamo puntuali, idem le nuvole che, come sempre, ci impediscono di vedere un tramonto come si deve, anche se l'orizzonte è comunque molto, molto affascinante.
We get there on time, but even the clouds are on time. As always. Anyway, sunset is really beautiful!
Mallory Square is crowded: all the people don't knwo that we are bringing clouds with us! There are even many street vendors, they are selling food, fruit drinks and souvenir hand made...

Ci lasciamo trasportare fino a quando il sole non scompare e piano piano la piazza si va svuotando: ora l'obiettivo è di nuovo la Duval Street, per la cena oppure per i locali.
The atmosphere is cool, we are involved till the sun disappears and Mallory Square gets empty: people is now hitting Duval Street.
La via si riempie, infatti, di giovani, pronti a vivere la nottata, mentre noi siamo alla ricerca di quello che, secondo tripadvisor, è il miglior ristorante dell'isola. A dirla tutta non è un vero proprio ristorante, ma una sorta di mini food truck che fa tacos: il Garbo's Grill.
Young people is ready to live the nightlife, while we are looking for the best restaurant in town according to tripadvisor reviews. Honestly it's not a restaurant, it's a kind of mini food truck: specialty are tacos, its name is Garbo's Grill.
Una volta ordinato un taco di mahi mahi (lampuga) aspettiamo poco meno di un'ora (in America dove si mangia bene c'è sempre da aspettare) per gustare quello che poi sarà il taco più buono di sempre: insalata, pomodori, pesce, lime e una salsa fatta da loro leggermente piccante, un'esplosione di sapori!
Once ordered a mahi mahi taco it takes at least one hour to get the tacos (this happens often, but it means you are in the good place): this is not only a taco, the best taco ever: lettuce, tomatoes, fish , lime and a sauce slightly spicy, amazing!
Vorremmo fare il bis, ma non abbiamo alcuna voglia di aspettare un'altra ora, quindi decidiamo di andare allo Sloppy Joe's (il pub preferito di Hemingway)dove ci gusteremo una budlight con degli stuzzichini. In sottofondo un concerto country. Come direbbe qualcuno, "what else"?
We would like to go for the second round but not to wait for an hour, so we opt for the Sloppy Joe's (Hemingway's favourite pub). In the background country music live. What else?
Prima di tornare in camera ci mancherebbe ancora una cosa da provare: la famosissima key lime pie. L'avevamo assaggiata due anni fa, ma non ci aveva entusiasmati:tuttavia è giusto dare una seconda chance alla specialità dell'isola ed infatti, volta abituatisi alla dolcezza mista all'aspro del lime, dobbiamo ammettere che, nonostante non sia il nostro dolce preferito, comunque non è affatto male!
Before returning to the B&B there is one more thing to do: eat the famous key lime pie. We had already tasted it two years ago, now we are giving to the island specialty a second chance: at the beginning the mixture between bitter amd sweetness is a little bit strange, but we have to admit that, although it is not our favourite dessert, this key lime pie is not so bad!
Ah, si accendono le luci e... si accende Key West. Qui hanno preso decisamente sul serio l'"addobbate le vostre case che è Natale", c'è anche una gara e molte famiglie sono pronte anche quest'anno a tutto pur di vincerla. No, Key West non è un posto come gli altri...
Well, as soon as the lights turn on, Key West becomes... a Christmas Town. There is even a competition a many families are ready to win the first prize. No, Key West is not a place like any other...
