Provence: the land of... lavender (Day 1)

Avevamo sentito i racconti di chi ci parlava di quanto fosse bella la Provenza, della sua natura, dei suoi borghi arroccati, della qualità del cibo...e poi lei, la lavanda, che tra fine giugno ed inizio luglio, fiorendo regala colori da cartolina. Avevamo solo immaginato, ora l'abbiamo capito. La Provenza è un luogo magico, dove perdere i sensi...e dove perdersi tra romanticismo ed esplorazione. Noi di tempo ne abbiamo poco, due giorni e mezzo (da giovedi pomeriggio a domenica), troppo poco per cogliere tutte le sfumature di una regione grandissima, che si estende dal mare della Costa Azzurra (a sud) sino ad Avignone (ovest), a Briancon (nord) ed ovviamente sino al confine italico (est). Noi ci siamo concentrati solamente sulla parte centro-occidentale, ben consapevoli che, per non perdersi davvero nulla, sarebbe servita almeno una settimana. Arriviamo da sud, attraversando il confine a Mentone (Montecarlo) e risalendo la regione una volta giunti a Nizza. Scolliniamo sul Col de Vence (963 m) e puntiamo dritti verso Comps-sur-Artuby.

DAY 2: Lavender Botanic Trail, Sault, Mont Ventoux, Abbaye Notre Dame de Senanque, Avignon

DAY 3: Parc Naturel Regional du Luberon, Roussillon, Ochres Trail, Rustrel, Colorado Provencal

We had heard the stories about how beautiful Provence was, its nature, its perched villages, the quality of food ... and then the lavender, which by the end of June and beginning of July, flourishes and gives amazing colors. We had only imagined it, now we can definitely understand. Provence is a magical place where you can just lose your senses ... and where to lose yourself between romance and exploration. We have two and a half days to spend here (from Thursday afternoon to Sunday), that's won't be enough to capture all the nuances of a great region stretching from the Côte d'Azur (south) to Avignon (west), to Briançon (north) and to Italy of course (east). We're going to visit only the center-west side: if you want to visit the entire region you will need at least one week. We are coming from the south, crossing the italian-french border in Menton (Monte-Carlo) and then crossing the region. From the sea to the mountain Col de Vence (963 m) and then straight to Comps-sur-Artuby.

DAY 2: Lavender Botanic Trail, Sault, Mont Ventoux, Abbaye Notre Dame de Senanque, Avignon

DAY 3: Parc Naturel Regional du Luberon, Roussillon, Ochres Trail, Rustrel, Colorado Provencal

E' già pomeriggio e di tempo non ne abbiamo molto, ma una spruzzata di Gole del Verdon non vogliamo farcela mancare. Due sono le strade panoramiche che, una a nord e l'altra a sud delle gole, vi consentiranno di ammirare alcuni dei panorami più belli della Provenza. Noi scegliamo, semplicemente per una questione di comodità, la D71 (versante sud) l'alternativa sarebbe la D952 con una piccola escursione lungo la D23 (route des crétes), una sorta di loop panoramico a ridosso delle gole. Entrambe le strade vi porteranno all'interno del Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon e quindi anche allo splendido Lac de Sainté-Croix.

It's already afternoon and we do not have much time, but we can't really miss the Verdon Gorges. There are two panoramic roads, one north and the other one south of the gorges, allowing you to admire some of the most beautiful views of Provence. We choose, simply for convenience, the D71 (south slope): the alternative would have been the D952 with a small excursion along the D23 (route des crétes), a kind of panoramic loop close to the gorges. Both roads will take you to the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon and then to the beautiful Lac de Saint-Croix.

Sulla carta è quella a nord la più "bella", se non altro perchè vi porterà a visitare quello che probabilmente è il borgo più bello dell'intera Provenza, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Noi però dobbiamo raggiungere Montagnac-Montpezac e ci "accontentiamo" del versante sud di quello che è soprannominato il "grand canyon europeo".

The northern side should be the most beautiful part, also because you will encounter one of the most enchanting village in Provence, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. We must, however, reach Montagnac-Montpezac and prefer to drive along the south side of what is called the " European Grand Canyon".

Diciamo che le somiglianze con il ben più famoso canyon americano non sono poi molte, più che altro le somiglianze esistono con un altro canyon sempre a stelle a strisce, ma quello di Yellowstone. Siamo nel cuore delle Alpi della Provenza ed il primo impatto con il canyon l'avrete al view point dei "balconi della Mescla", accompagnato da un ristorante ed un negozio di souvenir. Il primo di una lunghissima serie.

Well, we have to say that it's very similar with another canyon, even if it's called the "european Grand Canyon". We are talking about the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We are in the heart of the Provence Alps and the first impact with the canyon is from the "balconies of the Mescla". There's also a restaurant and a souvenir shop. The first of a long series.

Il fiume Verdon, che scorre all'interno del Canyon, e le montagne saranno vostri fedeli compagni per i prossimi 40 km. Attraversiamo il Pont de l'Artuby e raggiungiamo uno dei view point sicuramente più interessanti, il Tunnel de Fayet. Un piccolo tunnel scavato nella montagna, dal quale ammirare le "Gorges du Verdon" da una posizione davvero privilegiata. La natura, imponente, qui è ai suoi massimi livelli.

The Verdon River, which flows through the Canyon, and the mountains will be our loyal companions for the next 40 km. We cross the Pont de l'Artuby and reach one of the most interesting view point, the Fayet tunnel. A small tunnel excavated in the mountain, from which you can admire the "Gorges du Verdon" from a privileged location. 

Prima di raggiungere il Lac de Sainte Croix incrocerete altri quattro punti di osservazione: Falesie du Cavalier, Falesie du Bauchet, cirque du Vaumale ed Alguines. Una volta raggiunta quest'ultima il lac du Sainté Croix apparirà davanti a voi con i suoi colori caraibici: un blu così difficilmente lo troverete da altre parti.

Before reaching Lac de Sainte Croix you will encounter four more observation points: Falesie du Cavalier, Falesie du Bauchet, Cirque du Vaumale and Alguines. Once you reach lac du Sainté Croix, a Caribbean water will appear in front of you.

Una visita in Provenza che si rispetti non può prescindere da un paio di giorni spesi in questo lago, tra kayak, escursioni ed ovviamente anche un bagnetto nelle sue acque limpidissime.

In a trip to Provence you will have to spend a couple of days in this lake. You can make kayak, hiking and of course take a bath in its crystal clear waters.

Noi tuttavia (e come di consuetudine) di tempo non ne abbiamo: dobbiamo raggiungere Montagnac-Montpezac dove spenderemo la nostra prima notte in terra di Provenza. E che notte. Già, perchè siamo pronti a giocarci un gran bel jolly: dormiremo, infatti in una "bolla", per godere al meglio della splendida natura provenzale.

However, we  are as usual in a hurry. We must reach Montagnac-Montpezac where we will spend our first night in Provence. Well, what a  night. We will sleep in fact a "bubble", to enjoy the best of Provence's beautiful nature.

Dormiremo sotto le stelle delle "bolle" di attrap-reves (http://www.attrap-reves.com/en/) in mezzo ai boschi di Montagnac-Montpezac, una delle quattro cittadine in cui è possibile effettuare questa meravigliosa esperienza. Le altre sono Allauch, La Bouiladisse (entrambe appena sopra Marsiglia) e Puget Ville, 30 km a nord di Tolone. Tutte e tre le località sono posizionate nel sud della Provenza, a differenza della "nostra", distante solo una manciata di km da Valensole, la "capitale della lavanda".

We will sleep under the stars of the "attrap-reves" bubbles (http://www.attrap-reves.com/en/) in the woods of Montagnac-Montpezac, one of the four towns where you can enjoy this wonderful experience. The others are Allauch, La Bouiladisse (both just above Marseille) and Puget Ville, 30 km north of Toulon. All the three locations are located in the south of Provence: the attrap-reves of Montagnac-Montpezac where we're staying is located only a handful of miles from Valensole, the "lavender capital".

Abbiamo optato per la "bolla" Zen (146 euro con assicurazione annullamento), compresa oltre all'alloggio c'è anche la colazione alla francese (croissant, baguette con burro e marmellata, spremuta di frutta fresca e bevanda calda). La cena, sotto forma di "cesto pic nic", è disponibile ed acquistabile a parte, così come l'esperienza nella Jacuzzi. Siamo accolti dalla gentilissima proprietaria e dal compagno, lei parla italiano e ci fa sentire subito a casa.

We've chosen the "Zen bubble" (146 euros with cancellation insurance), french breakfast (croissants, baguette with butter and jam, juice of fresh fruit and hot drink) included. You'll have to pay an extra for the dinner (a "picnic basket") and the Jacuzzi. We are greeted by the very kind owner and her boyfriend, she speaks Italian and makes us feel right at home.

Ci offre persino un telescopio per poter ammirare al meglio le stelle. Di giorno all'interno della "bolla" fa caldino, di sera le temperature scendono vertiginosamente, ma coperte e stufetta sono in dotazione. Il bagno è situato appena fuori la "bolla". Siamo noi, il cielo, le stelle, il bosco e la natura più incontaminata. Un'esperienza da "once in a lifetime".

There's also a telescope: we can definitely watch the stars as well as possible. It's pretty hot inside the "bubble" during the day, but in the evenings the temperature drops vertiginously. Anyway blankets and stoves are provided. The bathroom is located just outside the "bubble". It's us, the sky, the stars, the woods and the most uncontaminated nature. A "once in a lifetime" experience.
