DAY 3: Chicago - Springfield (Illinois)
Eleven states, four time zones and nearly a month of travel. The eighth "stars and stripes" adventure is the most beautiful, the most exciting ... is basically the journey of life for those who love the United States. DAY 3: Chicago - Springfield (Illinois)
L'on the road parte da Chicago, una città che già nel 2013 avevamo visitato in lungo ed in largo e che abbiamo raccontato in queste pagine. Non abbiamo mai nascosto il nostro amore per la città regina dei grandi laghi, la "windy city", la prima città verticale d'America. Per noi la più bella di tutte.
The on the road starts from Chicago, a city that we already visited in 2013(look for "Chicago" in this blog) We have never hidden our love for the queen city of the Great Lakes, the "windy city", the first vertical city in America. The most beautiful of all to us.
Nel giorno e mezzo a disposizione ci siamo concentrati su quello che non avevamo ancora visto, con l'eccezione della Willis Tower, nota anche come Sears Tower, quello che fino al 1998 è stato l'edificio più grande al mondo.
In a day and a half we focused on what we had not seen yet, with the exception of the Willis Tower, also known as the Sears Tower, which has been the tallest building in the world till 1998.
Situato nel cuore di downtown, è senza dubbio il grattacielo che amiamo di più, se non altro per la possibilità, al piano numero 103, di visitare lo"Skydeck", due balconate costruite completamente in vetro e sospese nel vuoto. L'adrenalina, sospesi a più di 400 metri di altezza, scorre davvero a fiumi. Il costo del biglietto d'ingresso è di 22 dollari.
Located in the heart of downtown, it is undoubtedly the skyscraper we love the most. Just for the opportunity to visit the "Skydeck" located at the 103rd floor: two balconies built entirely of glass and suspended in space. Quando si è a Chicago però una delle prime esperienze in assoluto da vivere è assaggiare la Deep Dish pizza, la famosissima pizza alta. E dove andare se non dal "re" della Deep Dish, Gino's east, che con le sue tre location chicagoane vi permetterà di non dover macinare troppi chilometri o cambiare svariate metro per gustarvi una delle pizze più strane al mondo. A patto che sappiate resistere alle spesso interminabili code sia per entrare nei locali che per ricevere la pizza. Noi abbiamo optato per la location in fondo alla Magnificent Mile e, come sempre, la pizza ci è piaciuta moltissimo anche se della "nostra" ha veramente ben poco.
One of the first experiences while in Chicago is definitely the taste of the very famous and popular deep dish pizza. And going to the king of the deep dish pizza, Gino's east, is a kind of must. Gino's owns three restaurants in Chicago. You will have to wait in line before getting a table, but wait worth it.
Il day 2 lo abbiamo aperto dal Millennium park, dal famoso "bean" ed in particolare dalla stazione ferroviaria, da dove vorremmo prendere il treno che porta ad Hyde Park. Rischiamo il disastro quando saliamo su quello sbagliato (direzione Indiana!), ma fortunatamente ci accorgiamo in tempo e riprendiamo il convoglio che porta a sud della città, sostanzialmente nel quartiere dove è nato e cresciuto Obama. Avevamo grandi aspettative dopo aver letto diverse recensioni positive sull'area, in realtà non ci ha impressionato più di tanto. Tanti "lavori in corso" e vista sullo skyline non indimenticabile dal "parecchio pubblicizzato" promontory point. Eroici invece gli abitanti della città che in una delle spiagge del lago Michigan si tuffano nell'acqua gelida. Ma d'altronde siamo nella "patria dei coraggiosi".
We open the day 2 from the Millennium park, from the famous "bean" and in particular from the railway staion. We're very close to get into the wrong train (to Indiana) but luckily we realize in time where we are. Our goal was the south of Chicago, Hyde Park, the neighborod where Obama grew up. We had high expectations after reading several positive reviews on this area, anyway it really did not impressed us that much. Many "work in progress" and not memorable views of the skyline from the "long advertised" promontory point. However heroic inhabitants are having a bath into the icy Lake Michigan. We really are in the "home of the brave."
Il downtown ed in particolare l'area del "loop" è sempre tremendamente affascinante, con il freddo e con il caldo, di giorno e di sera. Ma se siamo a Chicago è perchè qui prende il via la strada più famosa al mondo, la route 66. Ed è proprio a ridosso di Grant Park che sono situati i due cartelli che segnalano il "begin", uno a distanza di 100 metri dall'altro. Non abbiamo ancora iniziato il viaggio, ma l'emozione è già fortissima.
The downtown and especially the "loop" area is always tremendously charming, day and night. Anyway, we are here because we are going to hit the route 66 and here lays the two sign that indicate the "begin" of the world most famous road. The journey hasn't started yet journey, but the excitement is already very strong.
Torniamo al navy pier, il molo turistico della città, a distanza di tre anni. A dominare la scena, come allora, sono i ristoranti (su tutti Bubba Gump) e gli shop, oltre ovviamente alla ruota panoramica, il cui costo è cresciuto a dismisura a distanza di trentasei mesi.
We return to the navy pier, the picturesque harbor of the city, three years later. The scene is dominated by restaurants (Bubba Gump above all) and shops, and of course the Ferris wheel.
For the second dinner we are planning to eat "one of the best burgerof the entire Illinois". We struggle to reach the Au Cheval (800 W Randolph St) and when we finally find it we realize that we would have to wait in line for two hours and half. Whan can we do now? Obviously go to Shake Shack, which never let us down!
Ci manca però ancora una cosa per poter dire di aver visto tutto il meglio che Chicago può offrire. Siamo ancora a Grant Park, sulle sponde del lago Michigan, per assistere ad uno degli spettacoli più interessanti che la città offre durante la sera: le Buckingham fountain.
There is still a place left to see. It's still Grant Park, close to the Michigan Lake: we are attending one of the most interesting performances by the city during the evening, the Buckingham fountain.
La musica accompagna il continuo cambio di colori delle fontane, sullo sfondo lo skyline chicagoano. Siamo talmente ammaliati dallo show che non ci accorgiamo del fortissimo temporale che sta sopraggiungendo.
Music accompanies the continuous change of colors of the fountains:the skyline is behind them, in the background. We are so fascinated by the show that we are not aware of the strong storm that is oncoming.
Se ne sono andati quasi tutti, mentre il diluvio ci obbliga a rifugiarci all'interno dei bagni del parco. Ma come si dice in questi casi, "route 66 bagnata, route 66 fortunata...".
All the people are gone, while the flood obliges us to take refuge inside the park's restroom. Anyway, Chicago is always beautiful, even when it's raining...
